Corpus Christi, TX (March 9, 2001) -- Interconnect Services announced today it has been selected by Sherwin Alumina Company (formerly an affiliate of Alcoa Inc.), to supply Internet access and Internet security services for the Sherwin Refinery located near Corpus Christi, TX. The Sherwin Alumina Plant has approximately 900 employees.
The Sherwin refinery, located 15 miles north of Corpus Christi, TX., has a production capacity of 1.6 million metric tons per year. It is the ninth largest alumina facility in the world and one of only four alumina plants operating in the U.S. The plant is a major supplier of metallurgical and chemical aluminas to the North American market.
On January 3, 2001, BPU Reynolds, Inc. and Alcoa jointly announced the sale of the Sherwin alumina refinery to BPU Reynolds. The sale was completed on December 31, 2000. Agreement on the sale, which was required by the U.S. Department of Justice when Alcoa acquired Reynolds Metals Company, was announced in October.
